Als der 21-jährige Wolf Jobst Siedler 1947 aus der Kriegsgefangenschaft nach Berlin zurückkehrt, ist die ehemalige Reichshauptstadt eine in Trümmern liegende "Viermächtestadt". Aber selten war das intellektuelle Leben so aufregend, und Siedler hatte daran teil. Im Osten ging er in die Premiere von Bertolt Brechts "Mutter Courage", im Westen in die deutsche Uraufführung von Sartres "Fliegen" und Thornton Wilders "Wir sind noch einmal davongekommen", die Sensation der damaligen Berliner Theatersaison.
Für noch mehr Furore sorgten damals junge Autoren, und das Buch erzählt von ihnen. Der junge Heinrich Böll besucht Wolf Jobst Siedler in dessen Dahlemer Elternhaus. Siedler verleiht als Juryvorsitzender Martin Walser seinen ersten Literaturpreis für den Roman "Ehen in Philippsburg", im Kolbe- Haus trifft er den damals halbverfemten Gottfried Benn, der aus ungedruckten Gedichten liest.
Als Panzer den Aufstand vom 17. Juni gerade niedergeschlagen haben, wird Siedler 1953 zum Sekretär des "Kongresses für die kulturelle Freiheit" bestellt. Mit 29 Jahren leitet er das Feuilleton des "Tagesspiegels" und wird zu einem Schrittmacher im literarischen und kulturellen Leben der geteilten Stadt.
Glänzend erzählt sind seine Begegnungen: mit Thomas Mann in Bad Gastein, mit Konrad Adenauer im Hotel am Zoo, er erinnert sich an Hannah Arendt und Verhandlungen mit Martin Heidegger, an Ernst Jünger und an ein Autorengespräch mit Carl Schmitt. Die legendären Berliner Lokalitäten lässt der Autor vor seinem inneren Auge Revue passieren. Episoden wechseln sich ab mit unvergesslichen Begegnungen und prägenden Lektüren.
Wenn die Literaturkritik bislang den Berlin-Roman vermisste, hier findet sie ihn: freilich ein Roman mit einem strengen Realitätsprinzip. Mit leidenschaftlicher Skepsis hat Wolf Jobst Siedler immer wieder auf Versäumnisse und Fehlentwicklungen hingewiesen. Sein Buch "Die gemordete Stadt" sorgte 1964 für Furore. Neben die Kritik tritt der Spaziergang über die "Pfaueninsel": zwei Facetten einer Stadt, deren Zukunft Wolf Jobst Siedler uns in ihrer Vergangenheit entschlüsselt.
